Advanced Teaching Institute: Mastering Misconceptions in STEM

To be offered at a future date.

The semester-long institute comprises a series of seven interactive workshop-style Zoom sessions. We will meet on Thursdays from 10:30AM – noon Pacific. Advanced Teaching Institutes are intended for faculty who have completed a previous CET Faculty Teaching Institute or the Accelerated Online Teaching Institute.

Mastering Misconceptions in STEM will provide a supportive and informative space for faculty to engage in discussions of evidence-based instructional techniques that support deep learning for STEM students. Institute facilitators, guest speakers, and participants will engage in the following topics:

  • Managing challenging discussions around scientific consensus and evidence
  • Tapping into research to effectively bridge gaps between STEM novices and experts
  • Strategies to normalize struggle in the STEM classroom and beyond
  • How inclusion and diversity can drive scientific progress and discovery
  • Practical course activities that support students as independent learners
  • Cooperative assignment design to model scholarly collaboration
  • Considerations for lab and field work to support students’ deep learning

Certificates of completion will be given to those who participate in at least six of the seven synchronous Zoom sessions.
