Module 5: Facilitating Discussions

This online module is designed to help new teaching assistants learn how to lead student discussion groups. You will find here video clips from faculty, undergraduate students and current TAs, as helpful information. We intend that people who study this website will be able to do the following:

  • Select the discussion facilitation strategy most appropriate to a given situation.
  • Explain how to implement effective discussion-leading techniques.
  • Describe your role as facilitator and how it differs from the role of a lecturer.
  • Explain how to create an environment that supports discussions.
  • List strategies for maintaining the flow of discussion.
  • Explain how to use disagreement to benefit discussion, rather than hinder it.
  • Describe different ways to attend to problems with a discussion group.
