How do faculty establish and maintain a productive research agenda while balancing the demands of service and effective teaching that creates an environment for learning? In a research university in particular, exemplary research is required, but the role of teaching and service is often less certain. Institutional and department priorities vary greatly. Combining teaching, service and research requires a well-organized and informed annual "plan" that is proactive and that overcomes the uncertainty about what you should do to accomplish personal, professional, departmental goals.
