Balancing Academic Careers and Family
Event description
It can be challenging to juggle teaching, research, childcare, and other family obligations all at once. In this session we discuss various ways to handle these sometimes competing and sometimes mutually reinforcing commitments. We may consider such issues as: if and when to take a parenting leave, stop the tenure clock, accept or decline committee assignments, and develop new courses. What techniques often prove successful? How should junior faculty make appropriate plans for teaching and research to achieve a proper balance? Please join us for a serious discussion of the realities of family life in the academy.
