CET Institute for Staff Supporting Instruction

This institute will not be offered during fall 2020. Future offerings will be announced in the CET Newsletter.

The Center for Excellence in Teaching (CET) is excited to announce a new institute for staff launching Spring 2020! USC staff are crucial to the success of the university, working in various roles, including supporting faculty and schools in educating students, providing training that supports university culture, compliance, and operations, and supporting outreach education efforts.

Many USC staff members have contacted CET to request access to our faculty development institutes to better prepare themselves to support the university in instruction, training, and outreach. CET has responded by granting staff access to our institute materials; however, we have now received additional requests for training in the materials.

Therefore, we are launching the CET Institute for Staff Supporting Instruction. This Institute provides training in foundational pedagogy to help staff support the USC community. It is a great opportunity for instructional support staff to refresh their knowledge of course design and teaching practices. It is ideal for any staff in a training capacity who teach or train others. All USC staff who feel this would be useful to their work at USC are invited to register for the institute. Staff should consult with their supervisor to determine whether this training is an appropriate use of their time. CET will not monitor or track supervisory approvals; it is up to the staff member to keep approval documentation for their own records.

The Institute format and content is identical to that in the faculty institutes. Similar to faculty institutes, participants in the Staff Institute will work on an actual or hypothetical USC course or training module. The skills acquired in this process are transferable to other educational situations, such as training workshops.

The institute will be delivered asynchronously online using Blackboard, with two synchronous meetings held using Zoom. The synchronous meetings will be held on February 7 and April 24 from 12:00 noon until 1:00 pm. Access to both Blackboard and Zoom will be provided by the institute facilitators via USC login. Participants will need to have access to a computer with Internet access and a browser, as well as a usc.edu email address with a corresponding Blackboard account.

Each of the nine modules requires submission of a work product (assignment) or participation in a synchronous online class session. Participants completing seven of the nine modules will receive a certificate of completion.

List of module topics:

Module 1 – Introduction to online teaching and learning

Module 2 – Learning objectives

Module 3 – Aligning assessments to learning objectives

Module 4 – Assignment descriptions

Module 5 – Inclusive principles and course policies

Module 6 – Active learning
